A personal injury law firm marketing plan maps out which injury cases you want, how you will show up when accident victims search, and what you will spend each month to get there. The strongest PI plans build search rankings as the main channel and use paid ads and fast intake to sign cases while rankings grow.

This page gives you a month by month roadmap for your first year. It is built for small and mid-size US injury firms that cannot match a TV budget but still want a steady flow of signed cases.

Why a PI Plan Is Different

Personal injury is one of the most expensive markets in all of online marketing. Many PI keywords cost far more per click than almost any other industry.

That changes the math. A firm that only buys clicks pays top dollar for every case, forever. A firm that also builds rankings can lower its cost per case over time.

PI clients also behave in a specific way. Many search right after an accident, often on a phone. Many call the first firm that looks credible and answers fast. So speed and trust matter as much as visibility.

Before You Start: Three Numbers to Know

Write these down before you spend anything:

  • Average fee per signed case for your main case types
  • How many new cases you can take each month without hurting service
  • Your current cost per signed case, if you track it

If you do not track cost per case yet, start now. Ask every new client how they found you. You cannot plan without this number.

Months 1 to 3: Fix the Foundation

The first quarter is about fixing what already exists and setting up tracking.

Website and SEO. Run a full audit. Fix crawl errors, slow pages, and missing pages. Make sure you have a separate, strong page for each main case type, like car accidents, truck accidents, and slip and fall. Our personal injury SEO guide explains what each page needs.

Google Business Profile. Fill out every field. Pick the right categories. Add real photos of your office and team. Start a simple process to ask happy clients for reviews.

Tracking. Set up call tracking and form tracking. Connect it to your intake system so you can see which channel brought in each signed case.

Paid ads. If you run ads, cut them down to your best case types and cities. Turn off keywords that bring in calls you cannot take.

Months 4 to 6: Build the Pages That Bring Cases

The second quarter is about content that ranks and converts.

Case type pages. Build or rebuild pages for your top case types. Go deep. Explain the process, common injuries, insurance issues, and what a client should do next. Look at car accident lawyer SEO and brain injury lawyer SEO for examples of what each needs.

City pages. If you take cases from several cities, build a real page for each one. Use local detail like nearby courts and roads. Do not copy and paste the same page with a new city name.

Spanish content. If many of your clients speak Spanish, build real Spanish pages and make sure your intake team can answer in Spanish.

Links. Start earning links from real sources. Local news, bar groups, community groups, and legal directories all count.

Months 7 to 9: Grow Authority and Reviews

The third quarter is about trust.

More links. Keep building links each month. Steady, real links do more than a burst of cheap ones. Read our guide on link building for law firms for what to look for.

Reviews. Keep reviews coming in every month. Reply to each one. A steady stream of recent reviews helps you in the map pack.

AI search. Make sure your key pages give clear, short answers near the top. This helps you get named in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT answers.

Ad spend review. Check where you now rank well. You may be able to lower ad spend on those terms.

Months 10 to 12: Measure and Expand

The fourth quarter is about results and next steps.

Measure. Look at signed cases and cost per case by channel for the full year. Compare it to your starting numbers.

Expand. Add new case types or new cities where demand is strong and competition is weaker.

Plan year two. Move budget toward what worked. Cut what did not.

A Sample Monthly Budget Split

There is no single right budget. But here is a simple way to think about the split for a PI firm in year one:

BucketWhat it coversNotes
SEOPages, technical work, links, reviewsGrows in value over time
Paid adsLocal Services Ads and Google AdsBrings cases while SEO grows
IntakeLive answering, intake softwareOften the cheapest win
ReferralsPast clients, other lawyersLow cost, high trust

Most PI firms spend somewhere between $2,500 and $20,000 or more a month on SEO alone, depending on the city and case types. See our law firm marketing budget guide for more, or our pricing page for what we charge.

Intake: The Part Most Plans Skip

A PI firm can do everything right in marketing and still lose cases at intake.

Answer calls live, day and night. Reply to forms in minutes, not hours. Train intake staff to qualify cases fast and kindly. People who were just hurt want to feel heard.

Track how many calls become signed cases. If that number is low, fix intake before you raise your ad budget.

Choosing Which Case Types to Push First

You cannot win every injury search at once. Pick your first targets with care.

Look at three things for each case type:

  • Fee value. Truck accidents and catastrophic injuries usually bring higher fees than minor car crashes.
  • Search demand in your area. Car accident searches are common everywhere. Some case types are rare in smaller markets.
  • Competition. In big cities, "car accident lawyer" is very crowded. A narrower term like "rideshare accident lawyer" in a suburb may be easier to win.

A good first year plan often pairs one high volume case type with one or two narrower, high value ones. The narrow ones can rank sooner. The high volume one builds over time.

If your firm handles Uber and Lyft cases, see rideshare accident lawyer SEO. If you handle catastrophic cases, see spinal cord injury lawyer SEO.

Common Mistakes in PI Marketing Plans

Buying leads you cannot check. Some lead sellers send the same lead to several firms. Ask how leads are sourced and whether they are shared.

One page for every injury. A single "Personal Injury" page cannot rank for car accidents, truck accidents, dog bites, and slip and fall all at once. Each needs its own page.

Copy and paste city pages. Pages that only swap the city name rarely rank and can hurt the rest of the site.

Stopping too early. SEO that stops after three months wastes most of the money spent. Plan for at least a year.

Ignoring reviews. In the map pack, a firm with steady recent reviews often beats a firm with more reviews from years ago.

Not tracking signed cases. Clicks and calls are not the goal. Signed cases are. Without tracking, you cannot tell which channel is working.

Chasing every new channel. A new platform shows up every year. Get search, reviews, and intake right first. Then test new channels with a small budget.

Working With an Agency

If you hire help, ask how the agency will measure success. A good answer talks about signed cases and cost per case, not just rankings.

Ask who will do the work day to day, what you will get each month, and who owns the content if you leave. Our list of questions to ask an SEO provider covers the rest.

A Simple PI Marketing Scorecard

Use this scorecard at the end of each quarter. Keep it on one page.

NumberWhere to find itWhat good looks like
Calls by channelCall trackingGrowing each quarter
Forms and chats by channelWebsite trackingGrowing each quarter
Qualified leadsIntake notesA rising share of total leads
Signed cases by channelCase management systemGrowing, even if slowly
Cost per signed caseSpend divided by signed casesDropping over time for SEO
Answer ratePhone systemClose to every call answered live
New reviewsGoogle Business ProfileSteady each month
Pages ranking on page oneSearch Console or a rank trackerGrowing for your main case types

Look at the trend, not one month. A single month can swing for many reasons. Three quarters in a row tells you the truth.

What a Realistic First Year Looks Like

In the first three months, most of the work is fixing and building. Rankings may not move much yet. Calls from ads and referrals carry the firm.

By months four to six, newer and narrower pages often start to show up on page one or two. The map pack may improve as reviews grow.

By months seven to twelve, the firm should see more calls from search and a lower cost per case from SEO than from ads. In very crowded cities, the biggest terms can take longer. That is normal.

The firms that win in PI are usually not the ones with the biggest launch. They are the ones that keep going every month. Read why we do not promise 30 day rankings for more on honest timelines.

Who Should Own the Plan

Someone at the firm needs to own the plan. In a small firm, that is often a managing partner. In a larger firm, it may be a marketing or intake manager.

The owner does not need to do all the work. They need to check the numbers every month, ask hard questions of vendors, and make sure the plan does not drift.

Stay Inside the Bar Rules

PI advertising draws extra attention from state bars. Rules on case results, testimonials, and contacting accident victims vary by state. Check your state's rules before any campaign goes live. This page is about marketing, not legal advice.

Why SEO

Every click to your site has a price

Each visitor from Google is worth what you would pay Google Ads for that click. At 300 visitors a month and $50 a click, that is $15,000 a month in ad spend. SEO, at around $5,000 a month, builds rankings that bring those visitors without paying per click. Move the sliders to see your numbers.

What would this traffic cost in Google Ads?

Same traffic bought with Google Ads

$15,000 / month

That is $180,000 a year, paid click by click.

Leverage: about 3.0x the value of what you spend, once rankings are in place.

Example numbers. Real costs per click change by city, case type, and competition, and many injury terms cost far more than $50. SEO takes time to rank before this traffic arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should a personal injury law firm spend on marketing?

It depends on your city, your case types, and your goals. Many firms set a monthly budget they can keep for at least a year, split between SEO, paid ads, and intake. Start with what you can sustain, then grow it as you see cost per case drop.

What is the best marketing for a personal injury law firm?

Strong search rankings for your main case types, a complete Google Business Profile with steady reviews, and fast intake. Paid ads help while rankings grow. Most firms that last do all four.

How long does it take for PI marketing to work?

Paid ads can bring calls within weeks. SEO usually shows early movement in about 90 days, with strong rankings on hard terms in 6 to 12 months.

Should a PI firm do SEO or Google Ads?

Most should do both at first. Ads bring cases now. SEO lowers your cost per case over time. As rankings grow, many firms shift some ad budget into SEO.
