Search Intent Mapping

A practical SEO guide for service businesses that want clearer strategy, stronger topical authority, and better qualified search demand.

# Search Intent Mapping

Ranking for a keyword does not help if the page does not match what the searcher actually wants. Search intent mapping is the process of matching each target keyword to the type of page and content that satisfies it.

## The Four Common Intent Types

– **Informational.** The searcher wants to learn something. These searches usually favor guides, explainers, and educational content.
– **Commercial investigation.** The searcher is comparing options before deciding. These searches favor comparison content, reviews, and buying guides.
– **Transactional.** The searcher is ready to act. These searches favor service pages, product pages, and clear conversion paths.
– **Navigational.** The searcher is looking for a specific business or page by name. These searches favor a clean, findable version of that exact page.

## Why Mismatched Intent Fails

A commercial keyword answered with a purely educational blog post, with no clear service page in sight, often fails to rank well and fails to convert even when it does. Google looks at what already ranks for a term as a strong signal of what type of content that search wants to see, and a mismatched page type struggles against pages built for the right intent.

## How to Map Intent Correctly

Look at what is already ranking for the target keyword. If the results are mostly guides and articles, the intent is informational. If the results are mostly service or product pages, the intent is transactional. Build the page to match what is already working, not what feels easiest to produce.

## What This Prevents

Intent mapping stops a business from building the wrong page type for a keyword, which is a common, avoidable reason content fails to perform even when the topic itself was a good choice.
